Hetty was hiding behind the tree, her glasses just dangling over one ear. Her hair hadn’t been combed in days and it hadn’t been washed in a week. Hetty believed in bathing once a week including her hair. Her dress was 2 sizes too big and filthy. She didn’t believe in washing her clothes every time she wore them and besides this dress was her sister’s and she had filched it out of the hamper because her sister had nicer clothes.
Hetty was watching Ryan Vanderbuilt. She was in love with the older boy, although he would be horrified if he knew. He didn’t even like Hetty’s family and her older sister was in his class.
He was upper class in Crompton and Hetty’s family were lower class. The lived on the wrong side of the tracks as the saying goes. There actually were tracks through the town and she did live on the wrong side. The Vanderbuilt’s mansion was on the other side and Hetty dreamed of living there.
She had been inside many times since her mom was a maid there. It was the only work she could get in the area and since Hetty’s dad had died her mom spent her days cleaning for others and letting her own home and children go.
Hetty was 15 and Ryan 17. He had a girlfriend already but that didn’t stop Hetty from daydreaming about him and spying on him as she was now.
He and Becky were holding hands and walking past the tree now. Hetty put her glasses on and started to follow them. They didn’t even notice her they were so busy making eyes at each other and stopping to kiss. Ryan helped Becky over the roots in the path so she didn’t fall.
Hetty hid in the trees along the path. They were climbing a hill and starting to slow down even more. She had to be more careful in case they looked back.
They were nearing the top of the small hill. There was a small drop off and they called it Lover’s Leap. The kids liked to hang out there as it was clear and had lots of fallen trees as seats and who could beat the view not that too many of them were looking at the view over the hill.
Ryan and Becky had reached the top of the hill and looking for a place to perch themselves and before they had a chance, Hetty ran up the rest of the hill and pushed Becky off the edge. Becky screaming, rolled all the way to the bottom of the small hill.
She wasn’t hurt, she was furious. She got up and started to climb the hill.
Hetty, in the meantime, took advantage of Ryan’s distraction to plant a quick, wet kiss right on his lips. Becky yelled at Ryan to quit playing around and help her.
He was still looking at Hetty, very thoughtfully and ignoring Becky who was almost back to the top of the hill. Becky got to the top and went to punch Hetty and Ryan stopped her. His eyes never leaving Hetty’s.
Ryan gave Becky another shove down the hill and took Hetty into his arms and kissed her slowly and thoughtfully.
“Hmm,” Ryan said. He went back to kissing her, ignoring Becky who was almost back to the top. By now they had quite an audience. Hetty was in shock. She expected to be pushed away, not kissed like that.
“Ryan,” Becky whined, starting to cry. “What is going on here?”
“I don’t know, but that was the best kiss I have ever had and that includes you Becky.”
Ryan grabbed Hetty’s hand and started to lead her back down the hill making sure she didn’t trip on any roots or anything. Stopping occasionally to kiss her again.
RRRIIIINNNNGGGG……………Hetty groaned and sat up in bed.
