Judy and John – the Newlyweds

written by Teresa Dean Smeigh

copyright November 2015

Newly married Judy and John Burns stood surveying their future home, a run down cabin on the lake. John inherited the cabin from his uncle and hadn’t had any plans for it, but since he married Judy and they needed a home he thought it would be perfect for a young couple just starting out. Judy was into remodeling and her family business just happened to be remodeling and home building. Her brothers would certainly help her.

He was on his way back to the base tonight. They had gotten married in Vegas and took a short honeymoon there and headed back to Bush Mills. Judy had already lost her wedding ring once, but luckily for her John was able to find it for her. She was always losing things.

The cabin was getting darker as the light from the sun was disappearing behind the trees surrounding the cabin. Soon the moon would reflect silver off the lake.

Hush, Judy and listen.”

I don’t here anything, but birds and other wild creatures.”

Exactly no cars and trucks and kids screaming. Peace and quiet.”

Whoooosh!

What was that John?”

Oh, no Judy, the cabin is on fire. Judy come back here.”

She was already ripping the door open and screamed in pain.

John grabbed her hand, “Did you burn yourself?”

Yes, and it hurts bad.”

Let me call the police and fire and then I will take you to the hospital.”

But our home.”

It’s gone Judy, we will look for a new one when I get out of the military and home for good.”

The fire was in full blaze and gave off enough light for them to see two figures running off into the woods.
