“I know them,” John shouted and started towards the side of the burning cabin towards the direction they had been headed.
“John, NO!”
“Judy I have to go, they might get away. Wait here for your parents; I asked the chief of police to call them and they will take you to the hospital and tell the police that I am following the suspects to Bush Mills Grove. They will understand the area I mean.”
John took off and left her waiting for everyone. She could hear sirens in the distance. What about the danger, what about his flight back to the base, they won’t understand or will they, she didn’t know his position in the military? It was all hush-hush!
“Judy!” her mom shouted and then grabbed her in a hug.
Her father checked that she was not seriously injured and asked her where John was.
“He said to tell the police he was headed to Bush Mills Grove and they would know where to go. What is going on around here?”
“Judy, Joan I have to go. Joan take Judy to the hospital. I will check in as soon as I can get away,” and John headed to the chief of police.
“Mom! What is going on around here, seriously? Both Dad and John are acting strange. John is going to miss his flight.”
“Judy let’s go to the hospital. I can’t tell you any more than they did, but guaranteed that flight isn’t going anywhere until Lieutenant John Burns is safely inside.” Lieutenant?
“I didn’t know he was an officer and what about Dad?”
“I am sorry Dad is still involved with a special group in the military and John is one of his prized protegees. We have to keep this hush-hush or some important military information could leak out. Please don’t say anything or ask anymore questions. Off to the hospital with you!”
“Will they be alright? Mom, please tell me they will both be alright.”
Your Dad and John are both used to these sort of situations. There goes you Dad with the police.” I can’t stand waiting around and having no idea what is going on.
“Judy please let’s go!”
As Joan and Judy argued about leaving there was rapid fire from the direction of the grove area and both women quit moving. Oh God, no, John, Dad where are you?
The firemen were still fighting the cabin fire and the surrounding woods. They didn’t hear the shots above the roar of the fire and hoses spouting off water.
Judy and her mother clung to each other. John stumbled out holding his belly. A policeman was with him called for an ambulance to come over. They got him on a stretcher and Judy ran to his side.
“John are you all right? What is going on? Where’s dad?”
“Put both women in here with me,” John ordered. “Yes sir!” the EMT replied.
“Where’s my husband?”
“Get in here now! That’s an order, civilians or not.”
They got in and settled down as best as possible so they were not in the EMT’s way who was working on John. Judy held her mother.
“Your father is very brave and he actually pinned the men down so they couldn’t get out of the grove and after the gunfire exchange we found the suspects both down. Your father took a bullet in his leg, He will be fine, but he will be at the hospital right now, so quit making me talk and be quiet.”
Judy was so worried about John she had forgotten her own injuries. Once John was stabilized the EMT looked at Judy’s hands and put a temporary dressing on them. Thank God they are both alright!
